What is Depression?
Depression is a chronic mental health condition that may look like sadness or grief for a short period of time, but depression does not resolve on its own. Depression often takes the best parts of our life and puts them on hold. During a depressive episode you may feel intense despair, shame, or even physical pain which can lead you to question your ability to go on living. The debilitating nature of depression leaves you to suffer alone without a way to express your pain.
Signs of depression may vary for each person but the primary symptoms of depression tend to fall into categories that include

- mood changes
- disruptions in eating and sleep
- cognitive changes
- chronic negative thinking and potential suicidal thoughts
Therapy for Depression
Depression is a chronic mood disorder that will not resolve on its own. You may feel ashamed that you aren’t able to just “get over it”. Not being able to ‘get over it’ is what separates depression from sadness or grief. Sadness will typically resolve on its own with little impact to your overall well being. Grief can be a contributing factor to your depression—but it doesn’t cause depression.
The first line of treatment for depression is therapy with a licensed mental health professional. Therapy modalities that are proven to be effective at helping resolve depression include:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
- Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFT)
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
